Matthew's story

I joined Altis as a graduate consultant in 2018, initially coming from a background in software engineering with limited knowledge of data and analytics. While searching for graduate roles, I discovered Altis, and from my very first interview, I knew it was the right fit for me.

What motivated me to join the team was the strong sense of community I felt during my initial interview in Canberra. Everyone I spoke to radiated positivity and genuine enthusiasm for their work, which ultimately drew me into the world of data and analytics, despite my initial inclination toward software engineering.

One of my most memorable experiences at Altis has been participating in the Canberra Office Band. It’s a fun reminder of the vibrant culture here. Throughout my journey, I've faced challenges, particularly in the fast-paced consulting environment. A standout moment was during my first modern data platform project, where I had to quickly upskill in cloud infrastructure. This experience taught me that the ability to learn rapidly is invaluable, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how much more confident you become by the project’s end.

I take pride in the impact I’ve made through my projects, especially during my time at the Commonwealth Department of Health during the pandemic. Working on critical tasks, like developing systems to report daily COVID cases and collaborating with supermarkets to ensure secure grocery access for aged care recipients, was profoundly fulfilling.

Since joining Altis, my role has evolved significantly. I began as a report developer, and now I serve as a data architect, data engineer, and people leader. The supportive environment at Altis has allowed me to explore diverse roles, including facilitating training sessions.

I've learned a wealth of skills by leveraging the expertise of my colleagues. My journey from report developer to data architect is a testament to the knowledge I’ve gained through collaboration on exciting and challenging projects. The team culture at Altis, both in Canberra and across the company, is incredibly welcoming and supportive. No matter how busy everyone is, there’s always a willingness to help each other out. There have been countless moments where senior consultants have offered guidance during my early days, and I strive to provide that same support to new juniors. This culture of seeking help is essential for growth.

Looking to the future, I’m excited to see Altis expand and continue making a significant impact in the data and analytics landscape, especially as AI technology advances.
